- OK, before you all think I'm too crazy I'll tell you that I got the
- idea from a recent thread in one of the amateur radio news groups.
- It seems that many hams have discovered that you can use WD-40 as a
- contact cleaner/lubricant. It is used on a regular basis to quiet
- noisy pots and fix intermittent switches.
-
- Anyway, my left mouse button had gotten very bad lately (missing
- 20-40 percent of my left mouse button clicks) so I thought it
- would be a good test. I did have a spare mouse incase I really messed
- it up.
-
- I took the mouse apart exposing the failing switch.
-
- This mouse has the PCB mounted micro switch, looks like a small IC
- with a button on the top.
-
- I then put a small drop of WD-40 on top of the switch, enough to
- surround the button. Then I worked the button up and down several times
- to allow the WD-40 to penetrate around the button to the contacts
- inside. After that I cleaned off the exterior of the switch and any
- surrounding area with a clean dry cloth and put the mouse back together.
-
- To my surprise the improvement was very dramatic. It missed one
- mouse click in the first half hour after I re-assembled the mouse
- and none since, now that the WD-40 has had time to get to the contacts.
-
- I don't have any idea what the long term effects will be on the
- plastic housing of the switch but after three weeks everything seems
- fine so far. But use at your own risk. The original thread also
- cautioned against using other similar penetrating oil/lubricants.
- So I wouldn't recomend using anything other than WD-40.
